VERTICAL RIESLING FLIGHTS THIS JULY AT ALEXELI

We will be adding a vertical Riesling flight to our flight offerings in the tasting room this July. Riesling is one of the most expressive wines of our vineyard, showcasing the minerality that is a common thread through all of our wines. Come taste the evolution of our winemaking through 5 vintages!
Happy Summer! We’ve had a busy spring here at Alexeli. The vineyard is looking beautiful as we’ve already suckered the vines and thinned shoots out. Next we’ll organize the fruiting shoots so that they are evenly spaced out to create a roomy environment for the fruit to grow.
The vines have bloomed and most of the fruit has set, meaning that we have grapes (granted they are the size of a pin head). With this timing we are looking at a late September harvest, which may mean we dodged the grape eating migrating birds by a couple of weeks once again! Now we simply hope for a cool and even summer with no extreme spikes in heat and warm nights to ward off heavy dew.

We’re opening the winery to show off our two months of harvest work! We’ll have several library wines available to taste and purchase as well as our new release of Syrah 2012. We hope you’ll join us to celebrate the harvest season.
Harvest began September 15th this year … just two days after our daughter Elora was born! … and the earliest harvest this vineyard has ever seen! Early flowering and bud break and constant warm temperatures throughout the summer without extreme heat brought the early harvest.
Ripeness was very balanced across the board and seeds were mature and loose in the berry. Typically we see 10 – 15% grape losses due to Robins and Starlings, but this year the birds didn’t arrive in time to do any damage. We harvested roughly 51 tons of fruit (Pinot Noir, Chardonnay, Muller-Thurgau, Riesling and Gewurztraminer) and brought in an additional 12 tons (Malbec, Tempranillo, Grenache, Syrah and Merlot). Across the board we saw relatively lower acids in the fruit and slightly higher alcohol than typical years.
In the winery, we still have 7 open-top fermenters of Grenache, Malbec, and Syrah fermenting but the Riesling, Chardonnay, Gewurztraminer, Muller Thurgau, Pinot Noir, skin-fermented Chardonnay, and Tempranillo are all barreled down and finished with primary fermentation.
On November 8th (for wine club members only) and November 9th (open to everybody) we’re opening the winery to show off our two months of harvest work!
